As far as debut albums go, NoMBe succeeded. He displays a mastery over alternative summer feels, using acoustic and electric guitars, simple drum-lines and synthesized electro melodies; he checks all the right boxes. It's an album I can easily listen to while driving with the windows down. Topics on the 2018 album include one night stands, high school crushes, love at first sight and everything in between. Unfortunately, many of the best songs were singles released before the full album, which brings little new to the table. Those tracks include "Wait," "Do Whatchu Want To Me," "Drama (Feat. Big Data)," "Sex" and more, which truth be told, are all fantastic songs. That said, "Man Up" is a strong intro and "Milk & Coffee" is for sure my favorite song on the album. "Bad Girls" is a miss because of the chorus reminding me of a slide whistle, though it holds fun verses and an energetic grimy bass.
"Milk & Coffee" is one of those songs where everything works together perfectly. NoMBe's varied vocal effects tied to sweet melodic lyrics are like if Ed Sheeran had dedicated his career to surfer rock. The bouncy drum beat, catchy guitar riff, and dissonant keys blend wonderfully. This debut album is one that certainly put NoMBe on my radar as an artist to watch, and I am looking forward to hear what he can do next. "They Might've Even Loved Me" collects NoMBe's excellent singles and adds only more breezy tracks, establishing the artist as someone with real potential. If you like NoMBe after listening to this album, be sure to check out his EP with rapper Thutmose and his enigmatic Billie Eilish "Bad Guy" cover.
