Ladies and gentlemen, it's finally here. The highly-anticipated debut album of Jersey rap trio The $tepbros is a full nine songs long, all made this year. It's an instant comedy classic. The group shows real improvements in all aspects from songwriting to production, mixing, and singing. The album features a remastered version of their breakout single "She Kinda Quirky Tho" that displays not only a Napoleon Dynamite soundbite, but also, how far they've come. This group is so much more than quirky. They're really funny. The first track is one of my favorites, as it details the trials and tribulations of being unable to read in today's world, likening the experience to being lost at sea. They also try their hand at storytelling to great success on the song "Italian Family Guild." The sixth track is a sensitive and sultry song about fishing. "Finance on My Mind" is a glimpse into the crack cocaine-ridden, high-stakes business lifestyle only a few attain. The eighth track is like if Future's "Perkys Calling" was written and performed by three talented white boys from Roseland who also really care if you're addicted to percocet and want you to get help. The final track, "Gary Busey," is a tight, slinky little dance groove that made me laugh out loud multiple times. It's surely a high point on the album for me.
All in all, "O Stepbrother, Where Art Thou?" is a concise but complete project that encourages you to delve into a delightful madness of humor and unique instrumentals. I hope there's more to come from this group, and I really hope they never use an erhu again.
